The symbols and scenery on my Postcard Tarot—or any traditional deck—can be confusing at first. But I’m your guide, here to help you decode them. Such as—literally, mentally, intuitively, experientially, figuratively, metaphorically, nominally. Enquiring into an image through various perspectives can be very rewarding.
This spread of six cards can be read left to right as a sentence. I drew the cards blindly from my collection of hundreds shortly after the Chinese New Year to get a read on how things will go this year. We can’t see the whole of every picture but the first card reads, ‘In a crowded room my eyes will always land on you’. It’s from a greeting card one might send to a lover. Is this a genuine expression of affection or fawning loyalty to an insecure authority? The second card is of a Vietnamese tabletop hot pot. I don’t know why Americans don’t embrace this Asian restaurant tradition where a fire is lit at the center of a table and fresh ingredients are thrown into a pot or small wok. Everything cooks before your eyes, and fast! Then we have a fully armored soldier on an armored horse, ready with javelin, for battle. A soldier from such a medieval time served a King. Horses carry men faster than they can run. It reminds me of horsepower. Hey, the way that hot pot is just behind the horse it sure looks like he’s got a fire under his ass. Beneath him we see beams of light streaming down onto people traveling through Grand Central Station. The way the lights rain down behind the diva like that reminds me of a Taylor Swift concert. She’s featured in a poster for a production of Ken Ludwig’s screwball farce Lend Me A Soprano, a female version of his earlier farce, Lend Me A Tenor. A key feature of most comedies and tragedies is the feature of last minute tension. Disaster has struck the Opera House. Will the show go on? It must. Replacements fill in. Huh, seems to have some September dates on there. My favorite month to go to the beach, usually on my birthday, September 2! Seashells. Finally! After all that firepower, we have water. Shells are protective, hard exoskeletons. Hey, that reminds me of the armor on the soldier and horse. created by soft-bodied marine invertebrates known as mollusks. These creatures, including clams, snails, oysters and scallops secrete minerals to build their shells, using them for protection. When the mollusk dies, empty shells are often inhabited by hermit crabs, fish, or octopuses. A shell is a home. Time to go crabbing! You may have already intuited why I bolded certain words. I see them as keys. And how they play into an archetypal story or how they play out in reality is very interesting. As the year plays out, it’ll be interesting to see what correlations you can make between the cards and big ticket events. Some I mentioned. Here are a few more. Can you see others? Money, preeminent symbol of power, security and freedom, indeed makes the world go round. Many of my clients ask what the Postcard Tarot has to say to them about it. No matter how many assets, how much cash, credit or debt one has, it’s easy to worry about it. Jobs get lost. Houses need repair and estates sorted through. We move. There’s rent, college, marriage, divorce, elder care. The list goes on. I have a psychic story to tell about capital, love and the prescient wisdom of my symbolic oracle. In Hawai’i, we have an expression: “Money is mana.” Mana being a spiritual life force or energy. Energy has to go somewhere. It must be exchanged. Say someone is getting free benefits—housing, travel perks, whatever. Unsaid or not, something must be given in return. Love, companionship, a gift, etc. This can often be satisfactory. Unless doling out dineros becomes an instrument for control. I have a postcard in my deck that simply says, “It can’t rain all the time!”, a line from the 1994 film, The Crow. When my client (I’ll call her Sheila) saw the card land in her house of Moolah, she immediately let out an expletive in disappointment. What the heck is going on here? Sometimes a card’s meaning is initially baffling. We have to pause to look it over from different angles to see what it’s trying to convey. Usually, the confounding ones are trying to surprise you. This one doesn’t disappoint. My signature Tarot Postcards are like those sold in an art museum. Some of them actually are. It can be obvious what they’re portraying. Sometimes we have to put on our detective hats. When I’m looking for psychic messages in a card I start by using a technique a docent once taught me. I find a particular detail that attracts my attention, and ask, Why am I drawn to this? At this moment, in this card, it’s the sign with two arrows that says, “Full Serve, Self Serve”. What Color Will Dominate In Your Spread? A reading with me contains a photo of a signature circle of 12 postcards. Each arrangement is as unique to you as your thumb print. Each one lays out a roadmap: an invitation to explore and interpret a symbolic illustration of your current path in life. Will you sign on to a new job or project offer? Manage to take that vacation you’ve been eyeing? And what about those in-laws, neighbors, co-workers and bosses? Will harmony prevail? A conflict be negotiated? The aims achieved? Every facet of life is on the table. The elements of Fire (drive), Water (emotion), Earth (material possessions) and Air (innovation and ideas) are represented. When we study the images in the photos that emerge for you, themes will come up. I have collages of all the colors of the rainbow in my oracle collection. Let's look at some psychic symbolic messages in the color BLUE as seen in a collage I made along with some other cards. Depending on where your eyes land, you might be attracted to the surfer’s blue wave, the farmer’s blueberries, the cowgirl’s blue jeans, the cerulean gemstones or the cyan aquamarine eyeshadow. This card stood out for me recently for its messages of passion and thrills. The surfer riding the wave, the luxury of the grapes, the gemstones and infinite blue sky. Maybe you’ll get Red—a whole different ballgame. Or Yellow. Then there’s how two colors mix and what they represent when they pair. That’s a story for next time. Or your next reading. Aloha, Derek [email protected] 646-696-8441 Dear Intuitive Enthusiast,
In My Most Recent Newsletter in September We focused on the impressive range of meaning one can gather from the elements of Fire and Water: You never know when you’re going to need some psychic inspiration—a reminder of the connections you have to the divine, and how to tap into the richness of the way simple elements and symbols present themselves to you—in coincidences, dreams, tarot cards or art. You can apply a personal situation you’re going through to a situation represented in a postcard image. Like, say, you just met this guy, or, you signed a contract on a job. We’re inquiring into it through how we see the elements of fire, water, earth and air behaving. Earth and Air are as polar opposite as Fire and Water. Earth needs Air. Soil and Air feed the plants. But if Air gets mad, you have a tornado on your hands and Dorothy best run into the cellar! All the elements can amaze us. Fire can be the forest burning down, which cleanses it actually. Water, the trickling fountain at your favorite spa, or thundering Niagara Falls. When we study the images in the photos that emerge for you, themes come up. Experience has said that most times, several of them will immediately resonate with you. I have collages of all the colors of the rainbow in my oracle collection. Click through to my blog to see a sample image from a reading. Maybe you’ll find Red—passionate, it stops us. Or Yellow. Then there’s how two colors mix and what they represent when they pair. That’s a story for next time. Or your next reading. Questions? My comprehensive website offers answers to commonly-asked questions about my psychic readings. New York Times: 2pm 3:30pm 5pm 6:30pm 8pm 9:30pm Of the nearly 500 postcards and art cards I’ve collected, 13 will serve as a psychic mirror into your world—if you ask them to. Some are from a deck of photos I've taken or collected from various cities, cultural sites and monuments. The cards that come out for you will carry significant meaning, if you look! One photo is of the waterfront in Helsinki Finland. It was a strange card to pop out in a recent reading for a client from Hawaii, as Finland is so far away. But my rule is that I have to accept the cards that come. Consider the Gift of a Postcard Tarot Reading for the Holidays! I’m always aware, when reading the cards, that they aren’t necessarily to be taken literally. When an odd card appears in a reading, there’s a reason. I’ve learned that those cards usually mean something deeper than what is literally depicted. I can’t be prejudiced about the cards. So what’s the abstract meaning? I don’t know much about Finland except I imagine the Finnish as being adept at art and fishing. I thought of The Helsinki Accords, which was a peace pact signed by the United States, Canada, and The Soviet Union. They were based on three principles: Security, Cooperation, and Human Rights. This can matter if a client is asking about a divorce, if a new job is going to last or if he’s going to get along with a new boss. Then I thought of the homophone Finish/Finnish. I said to my client, “I see you finishing a project or even quitting your job. Is that in your plans?” Her eyes lit up. “Boy is it ever! I’m so glad you see that.” My Postcard Tarot...It does have a way. Text, email or call me for an appointment. I generally work from 2:30pm to 8:30pm EST. If you live in Honolulu, come and see me. I'll brew up a tea and we can spread the cards out on the lanai. Google Meet also works great! I can read any photos you want to share. Aloha, Derek [email protected] 646-696-8441 www.derekcalibre.com “Here’s A Story Of A Lovely Lady…” If you were a television junkie like me growing up, you might recognize this lyric from ABC’s The Brady Bunch. I was only two when it came out in ’69. Almost all the after school TV I watched growing up were reruns. Star Trek, Bewitched, Gilligan’s Island, Bob Newhart, The Jetsons…
A little while back, a client came in for an in-person session. Her name happened to be Brady, a detail that would lead to a spot on psychic insight. From my years in New York and Honolulu— two multi-cultural, melting-pot cities—I became attuned to regional accents. Many of my clients have moved around a lot. When a mix of accents come out of someone, I don’t attempt to plumb origins. Others can say one word and give away the region of their roots. Have you ever conversed with someone whose accent is as flat as a newscaster. You might assume they’re American but then they pronounce the word, ‘about’ as ‘abōat’? You think, “Oh! You’re from Canada aren’t you?” I’m working towards some psychic magic here. This Brady lady was recently vacationing in Honolulu (Bunch Insiders: sound like a familiar episode?). Her reading felt cathartic and insightful, mostly because of her willing participation and buoyant spirit. The most rewarding readings are sprinkled with levity between the tender moments. This was one of them. Her accent is completely neutral. No drawl or glottal stops. None of the vowels have diacritical marks. My opening question to her might have been because her name is Brady. I leaned back and thought of Florence Henderson, the mother on the TV show. For years she famously appeared in TV ads for Florida Orange Juice. But surely the show was filmed in Hollywood? I asked, “Do you happen to come from or live in Orange County California?” She looked at me for a good five seconds. A closed-lipped smile slowly appeared on her face. “I was born there and raised between Huntington Beach and San Diego. How on earth did you arrive at that?” “For an answer you’ll have to take my online psychic class.” I continued, still going off the Brady Bunch impression. “So would you say you have, uh, two families, kinda merged together?” “Yes, after divorcing my dad my mother married to a guy who had two sons. I was about three.” When particular psychic perceptions come up in a reading, it’s for a reason. The cards are raising a topic, and we’re on the hunt as to why. The facets of your diamond mind are mindbogglingly infinite. When you break them down into simple components such as say, the four directions or four elements, the insights evolve into intricate strands, like a helix of DNA. It takes a master (that’s me) to consider an image's countenance, behavior, reputation, purpose, etc and turn it into a piercingly brilliant psychic insight. Ladies and gentleman, I, a wizard, am at your service. And if you have the wisdom to click the link above, you will be transported to my blog where you can study demonstrations of my sagacity the likes of which could only be supplied by a mensch like me, Derek Calibre, Intuitive Icon. You ask me all these questions. Will the money come through? How much? When? Should I sign on to a new job? Will it last? Can I manage to take that vacation I’ve been eyeing? And what about my in-laws, neighbors, co-workers and bosses? What caused this conflict? Will harmony be achieved? What is so and so thinking? Am I shooting myself in the foot by not negotiating? Can my aims be realized? Who knows? I do. Derek Calibre, psychic Guru. Let me provide you with a demonstration of how my gifted mind mines for the rare earth elements that power you and your story. And if you sign up for psychic class, you can learn my secrets! Well, some of them. Not all. For example, consider just two of the four elements: Fire (drive), Water (emotion), Earth (material possessions) and Air (ideas) are represented in pictures. Then there are the vertical forms of each of them. For example, how is your fire/drive appearing? As a spark? A firework, candle, warming fire, cooking fire, house fire, wildfire, lava (blasting or oozing), ember? And water/emotions. How are they running? Like dew drops? Swamp, puddle, faucet drip, running tap, babbling brook, stream, river (raging or meandering), pond, lake, ocean, waterfall, steam (Ooh! A mix of Ideas and Emotions). Let’s see…does someone need to blow off some steam? Or are they steaming mad? Hovering over a hot cup of joe? Steaming dumplings? Tending steaming machinery?) The neighboring cards will provide clues. And we will be on the case! Register for my psychic workshop and open up your intuitive powers. 'When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that’s amore!'
In your mind, I bet you sang that sentence. It’s practically impossible not to sing some lyrics as you read them. That imaginary space is where psychic ideas come from. There are dozens of famous songs about the moon sung by the likes of David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and on and on. 'How High the Moon’, Moon River’, ‘Fly Me To The Moon’...And don’t forget ‘Walking on the Moon’, by The Police. In my readings and psychic classes I employ active imagination exercises (don’t worry, I won’t make you sing). They facilitate a mindful dip into what I call Symbolic Reality. Starting in September, I’m offering online psychic classes the first Sunday of every month, 4pm-5:30pm Eastern. The fee is $35.
