About The Book
In the early 2000’s, I was working hard at turning my struggling Honolulu ice cream company into a success. I never would have imagined a future for myself as a globe trotting psychic and author of a book on the nature of the psychic mind. But that’s exactly what happened, and Can You Turn It Off?: A Diary of Psychic Awakening tells the story of how that came to be.
Initially, I had enjoyed some success in the ice cream biz. I had accounts with Neiman Marcus and Japan Airlines, recognition as one of Hawaii’s fastest growing companies, and even an award from the mayor’s office. But then fate stepped in when my friend and business partner died, and the economy tanked. I struggled at keeping the company afloat, and under mounting debt, I found myself in a deep career crisis.
Feeling lost, I turned to tarot cards for direction. I remember flipping them, asking, “Who am I? What is my talent? Where is my life heading?” I recorded the card’s messages in a journal. And what happened next, both amazed and baffled me! I began experiencing a curious stream of coincidences that could only lead me to believe my mind had somehow turned psychic.
One day I flipped a tarot card called Temperance, which pictures an angel mixing fire and ice in a bowl. The tarot books recommend you talk to the characters in the cards. So I asked the angel, “What do you have to say to me?” and she said, “I am ice and I burn. See my flames?” I thought: What a bunch of crap. How can ice catch fire?
The next day, my walk-in freezer burnt down. The defrost wires frayed and I found 500 gallons of ice cream melted across the floor. That’s when I thought: Wait, maybe there is something to this.
My curiosity piqued, I began recording more thoughts from the cards. And I noticed many of the ideas that came from them corresponded to my future reality.
I began doing readings for friends, then friends of friends. Next thing I know, I’m performing psychic readings for a living.
For several years, I kept a diary of thoughts on how, when, and why my psychic impressions were coming to me. Each perception seemed to reveal something about the nature of the psychic mind.
I noticed that even the simplest of my psychic visions could turn out to be significant— by virtue of appearing, say, where an opportunity presented itself or, around someone making me an offer.
We obviously can’t see the whole future, but we can see symbolic snapshots from it, which have correlations in our waking reality. I see these as like signposts on the path toward our goals.
I wrote the book in a diary format over the course of five years. As my psychic development progressed, the stories became more intricately magical: A meditative journey in which I'm transported to a place five hundred years ago, plays out later that same day in a Chinese restaurant. A New York client’s vision of a spirit guide appears several hours later, on a Broadway stage.
I wanted to share how fun and rewarding it can be to engage with the psychic mind. We’re more clever than we know. We just have to be observant enough to see it.
It’s my hope that this book will help demystify the psychic experience and provide a practical reference point for your own psychic development. It's written from the perspective of a guy who, at first, isn’t expecting anything psychic to be happening to him. You'll see how I become a student of the process.
Everyone has a psychic aptitude. If you read this book with the idea that it will open a channel for your own psychic coincidences, then the channel will be opened. Once you draw your attention to the psychic mind, it will give its attention back to you.
Have fun on your psychic journey!
Review by Karen Howard
"What a delightful book! Most of us have an entire shelf devoted to books on how to develop our psychic awareness, but this one’s different. We’re reading Derek’s journal as he meets his spirit guides and learns how to develop his psychic abilities. It’s an adventure, and an intriguing way of teaching. As I read about synchronicity, I began to see it popping up in my life. I took Derek’s advice and purchased a “psychic development journal” (spiral notebook from Barnes & Noble) so I can keep track of messages from my Guides.
The book begins with Derek the entrepreneur trying to keep his ice cream company in Hawaii afloat. It’s obvious (though not to him at the time) that his spirit guides feel he’s destined for something else. Constant challenges force him to question whether he’s in the right business and if he should continue trying to save it. And then one day…
The guides keep providing information, but Derek doesn’t always get the message. On June 12, a tarot card tells him, “I am ice, and I burn.” On July 2, he understands what that means. Message one received and understood and the guides move into high gear, providing meaningful dreams, clients whose tarot readings include symbols difficult to understand, and lots of synchronicity.
It was comforting to know I’m not the only one doing a reading and thinking, “Psychic Gods, please help me…” I saw myself in Derek’s shoes a lot throughout this book, and I learned the lessons right along with him. Synchronicity sent by my guides saw to that.
Can You Turn It Off? is a very easy read, and I learned more from it than many of the other (often unfinished) books on my shelf. As Derek encountered situations I’ve had in my life, I had to keep reading to see how he dealt with them and what he learned. Then I applied it in my own life to see how it fit. This was so different from other books that say, “This is how to do it. Follow these guidelines…”
Let me share one experience. The book’s cover suggests, “As you read…look for a subtle magic…taking place. By simply imbuing yourself in the atmosphere of a psychic’s unfolding, you might just experience your own curious co-incidences. Study them, and they will take you on a reward-ing and transformative journey.” I finished the book and left to do tarot readings. At the first traffic light I noticed a word on the back of the van in front of me: Quest.
I invite you to join me on the adventure!
Editor’s note: Visit Derek’s website, www.derekcalibre.com, and watch the short video. He’s so personable that you’ll imagine him talking to you as you read the book."

About The Cover
The wolf that you see, fused into my face, is one of my spirit guides. After coming to me in a meditation, he actually appeared in real life. Through a clever use of light, he presented me with an experience in which he laid his image over mine. I interpreted this to mean that he and I were one in a way.
This story is one of many that illustrates how your guide might come to you— even (and especially) through ordinary experiences.
The Frog pictured on the lower left-hand corner has also been an “aumakua” of mine. Aumakua is a Hawaiian word meaning, a protective deity. Your guides will present themselves in various guises. Interpreting the meaning behind these forms is key to understanding their messages.
The Starry Sky and Sunset also played significant roles in my psychic journey. They're so classic and archetypal that they'll very likely play a unique part in your journey as well!
The cover was designed by my beloved sister, Colleen.
